Octavo. [xiv], 1-385, [1, blank] pp. With fifteen illustrations printed in brown by Lieber, inserted throughout. Publisher’s dark blue cloth backstrip over brown laid-paper boards, front cover and spine stamped in gilt, dust jacket. Jacket spine slightly sunned, some rubbing and a few short closed tears to jacket edges, some light soiling to panels, some rubbing to cloth. Still, a pleasing, near fine copy, with an excellent association.

First trade edition (preceded by a signed, limited edition two years earlier). This copy with a later, two-page gift inscription by Dreiser’s sister-in-law (sister to his second wife, Helen Patges Richardson), Myrtle R. Bulcher (she was the basis of the title character of his short story, Reina, 1929). Inscription is on the reverse side of the half-title and frontispiece.
