In Patagonia. London: Jonathan Cape, [1977].
First edition, first impression (with printed map endleaves).
Octavo. [iv], [1]-204 pp. With eight pages of black and white photos inserted throughout. Publisher’s full blue textured paper boards, spine stamped in gilt, dust jacket. Jacket spine very slightly sunned (less than usual for this title), and a small circular burn hole on front panel (inside the “e†of “Bruce†at the bottom), and a few mild creases to rear flap. Front cover of book has small black mark near bottom, which corresponds to the burn hole on the jacket. Still, a near fine copy.
First edition, first impression (with the printed map end-papers). Bruce Chatwin (1940-1989) began his writing career writing articles for the Sunday Times Magazine on Art and Architecture. When he was interviewing 93-year old Eileen Gray, he noticed a map of Patagonia on the wall in her Paris salon. He mentioned that he had always wanted to go there, and she agreed that she had to as well. Then she told him to go there for her, and two years later he did so, and stayed there for six months, researching this book. In Patagonia became hugely successful and inspired a new generation of travel writers.
