The Rare Advance Proof Copy of William Golding’s, “The Spire”
GOLDING, William.

The Spire.    London: Faber and Faber, [n. d. ca. 1964].

Small octavo. 223, [1, blank] pp. Publisher’s printed light blue wraps. Some browning and mild rubbing to edges of wraps, a few crease marks to wraps, and a staple hole near the top of the front wrap (a similar hole is at the top of the laid-in sheet, clearly indicating that the sheet was once stapled to the front wrap). Still, a near fine example of a fragile item.

Uncorrected Proof Copy, with “Advance Proof of New Book” sheet laid-in.

William Golding (1911-1993), author of the classic book Lord of the Flies (1954) was a Nobel Laureate for Literature, and won the Booker Prize in 1980 for Rites of Passage. The Spire was selected by Anthony Burgess as one of the 99 best English novels since 1939. It is about the tortured lives of the people who are building the spire of Salisbury Cathedral, the highest church tower in England.
