A First Edition of Charles Haldeman’s First Book, “The Sun’s Attendant,” Inscribed by the Author to Film Director and Major Book Collector, George Cosmatos
HALDEMAN, Charles.

The Sun's Attendant.  A Diptych  New York: Simon and Schuster, 1964.

First edition.

Octavo. 320 pp. Publisher’s full blue cloth, front cover and spine stamped in gilt, dust jacket. Some mild edgewear to jacket, some rubbing and light sunning to cloth. With Cosmatos’ ink ownership stamp on the front free endpaper. Overall, a near fine copy with an excellent inscription and association.

First edition of the author’s first book. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first page: “For George Cosmatos/with all best wishes/and remembrances of/Chania/24. iii. 64/Charles Haldeman.”

Charles Haldeman wrote several novels (including The Snowman, and Teagarden’s Gang), but the most interesting thing about this copy is the association. George Cosmatos (1941-2005) was a major film director (Cassandra Crossing, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Cobra, Tombstone to name but a few), as well as an important book collector - so important that Sotheby’s sold his collection in March of 1998.
