Based on a series of lectures given by Woolf at the two women’s colleges at Cambridge University (Newnham and Girton), this monumental feminist piece examines whether women were capable of producing works of the same literary quality as their male counterparts. She discusses amongst others the works of George Eliot, the Brontë sisters, and Jane Austen all the while showing that women have been denied the same opportunities as men. The title comes from her famous statement in the first chapter that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.â€
