Joseph Hansen (1923-2004), was a successful mystery writer, whose great innovation was the creation of Dave Brandstetter, a hard-boiled, tough, no-nonsense detective who was also a homosexual. Hansen himself was a homosexual, but was married to a woman for over fifty years (the woman was a lesbian, but they truly had a loving, open relationship).
