This 1990 National Book Award winner takes place on an illegal American slave vessel in the 1830’s. The main character, a freed slave named Rutherford Calhoun, stows away on the ship to escape a forced marriage in New Orleans, and the story concerns his adventures and maturing during the difficult voyage.
