William Kennedy (born 1928) is a successful American journalist and novelist. Kennedy met two literary giants when he lived in Puerto Rico after his stint in the army: Saul Bellow (who encouraged his writing) and Hunter S. Thompson (with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship). He won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Literature for his novel, Ironweed.
