An Inscribed Dedication Copy of Gloria Naylor’s “The Women of Brewster Place”
NAYLOR, Gloria.

The Women of Brewster Place.    New York: The Viking Press, [1982].

Uncorrected Proof Copy of her first book. Inscribed to “George” on the half-title, who is one of the dedicatees as listed on the dedication page (“And George, who applauded loudest in his heart.”): “To George -/This book came from you/over a lot of miles +/took me back many years./All the best -/Gloria Naylor.”

Octavo. [xii], [1]-192, [4, blank] pp. Original publisher’s printed salmon wraps. With a review of the book by Claude Brown, taped to the front wrapper. The “Pub. Date” and “Price” spaces on the front cover are written in green ink: “6/82” and “13.95,” respectively. Very mild rubbing to spine, ink notations on front cover as mentioned above are smudged, and pp. 175 to the end of the book, as well as the rear cover have a crease in the lower corner. Still, a fine copy. Copies with warm inscriptions by Naylor are rare; no other dedication copy of any of her books has ever sold at auction, making this the most desirable copy of any of her titles on the market.
