First edition. Set in nineteenth century Australia, this novel incorporates real events and people into its fictional plot, most notably the 1890 Queensland Shearers’ Strikes and Queensland Legislative Council member James Tyson (1819-98).
Campbell-Praed (1851-1935) was a voluminous novelist, who produced over forty-five novels over a span of four decades. Her other works include Outlaw and Lawmaker, which incorporates the real-life convict who successfully escaped from prison in Australia and fled to America John Boyle O’Reilly (1844-90), and Nulma, in which the real Governor of Queensland Sir George Bowen (1821-99) makes an appearance.
