Two volumes. Octavo. vii, [ii], 306; [iv], 298 pp., plus 2 pages publisher’s advertisements in volume 2. A married set, yet bound to match, both in polished calf and pebbled cloth (one in red and one in maroon), spines gilt in compartments with morocco labels, top edges gilt. Volume with the armorial bookplates of John Ayris and Henry A.A. Thorn, as well as a gift inscription from Ayris to Thorn on title, dated 1900; volume 2 with armorial bookplate of the author, Alfred Henry Forrester.
First edition of this compilation, which consists of a collection of humorous essays written by Charles Robert Forrester, which were originally published in “Bentley’s Miscellany†and the “New Monthly Magazine†all accompanied by illustrations done by his brother Alfred Henry Forrester.
Forrester (1804-72), was known for his caricatures, illustrations, and children’s books, which he both wrote and illustrated himself. He was a frequent contributor to some of the more popular periodicals including Punch; The Illustrated London News; The Mirror and The Hive to name but a few. Crowquill was the pseudonym that Forrester first shared with his brother Charles Robert Forrester (1803-50) on their numerous collaborations. Alfred continued to use the name for his own work after his brother’s death.
