Washington Irving (1783-1859) was a novelist, historian, biographer, and essayist. Perhaps his most famous work is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," but he is also known for famous biographies of George Washington and Christopher Columbus. He is commonly regarded as the first American man of letters.
