“I could only have used you as you are.”
HESSE, Hermann.

Knulp. Drei Geschichten aus dem Leben Knulps.    Berlin: S. Fischer, [1915].

First edition.

Octavo. 3-146 pp., (wanting the front free end-paper, which is reckoned within pagination). Text in German. Bound in German paste-paper covered boards with paper spine label. Spine lightly sunned, some minor wear to extremities, interior lightly browned due to paper-stock, but overall a very good copy. From the library of Irgard Irmler, with her woodcut bookplate.

First edition of this important existential work. The central figure of the story, Demian, is a modern misfit and tramp of sorts, who is unable to conform to the society he lives in. During an imaginary conversation with God, in which God tells him “I could only have used you as you are,” he becomes convinced that he is the way that God has made him and that he is living that way God has intended him to. An important work, which examines the role that man plays in the world and his search for meaning, personal identity and truth.

Hesse (1877-1962), the son of a Pietist missionary, was a German poet and novelist who explored spirituality and self in his works. In 1946 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for “his inspired writings which, while growing in boldness and penetration, exemplify the classical humanitarian ideals and high qualities of style.” He is perhaps best know for his works Siddharta and Steppenwolf.
