First published in 1819, Irving’s The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon is a collection of cultural vignettes, exploring early American life and experience. The two most notable short stories appearing in this work are “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip van Winkle” – tales borrowed from the folklore of Europe and rewritten with a distinct American sensibility. The Sketch Book represents Irving’s experimentation with English literary tradition.

Washington Irving (1783-1859) was a novelist, historian, biographer, and essayist. Perhaps his most famous work is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," but he is also known for famous biographies of George Washington and Christopher Columbus. He is commonly regarded as the first American man of letters.
