A Handsome Illustrated Edition of John Ruskin’s Famous Work on Architecture
RUSKIN, John.

The Stones of Venice.  With Illustrations  New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1880.

An early version of this important work.

Three large octavo volumes. Each volume is subtitled as follows: volume I, The Foundations; volume II, The Sea-Stories; volume III, The Fall. Each volume profusely illustrated with views, diagrams, and layouts, several of which are in color. Handsomely bound in contemporary half turquoise levant morocco over blue marbled boards, spines tooled, ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Some rubbing and moderate wear to covers, each volume with a neat contemporary gift inscription on front blank. Still, a very good set.

John Ruskin (1819-1900) was an influential and popular poet, artist, art and social critic. His essays on architecture were extremely influential to Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Stones of Venice argues that architecture cannot be separated from morality, and that gothic architecture was the highest form yet achieved.
