First Edition of All Three Volumes of Ruskin's Autobiography
RUSKIN, John.

Praeterita.  Outlines of Scenes and Thoughts Perhaps Worthy of Memory in My Past Life  Orpington: George Allen, 1886, 1887, 1900.

First edition of all three volumes (volume III was published later, when Ruskin had re-worked an earlier essay, "Dialecta," and had added an Index for the entire work).

Three quarto volumes. With four engravings inserted throughout the three volumes. Uniformly bound in contemporary half vellum over dark green cloth boards, spines with two green gilt morocco lettering labels, and stamped in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endleaves. Spine labels on second and third volumes sunned and slightly worn (with minor loss to lettering), some rubbing to covers. Rear blank in volume I has a small creased tear. With the bookplate of Herbert Cooke in volume I. Overall, a near fine set.

This work, an autobiography, was primarily written whilst Ruskin was recovering from a mental breakdown. Ruskin (1819-1900) was one of the preeminent Victorian and Edwaridan social and art critics and writers.
