Crito is a dialogue between the jailed Socrates and his friend Crito. It takes place the night before Socrates is to be executed, and Crito visits him and tries to convince him to escape. Socrates refuses, arguing that reliance on the laws of the state is the only way civilized society is to succeed, no matter how painful those laws may be in the short term.

Professor Dale Maurice Riepe (1918-2006), was a major American philosopher and scholar, and was the Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo from 1963-1986, and taught at many other schools. His main area of expertise was Eastern Philosophy, and he traveled extensively. He wrote extensively, publishing over seventy articles and several books.
