Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was an important theologian, clergyman, “natural philosopher” (an early term for “scientist”), educator and political theorist. He was a strong proponent of religious and philosophical tolerance, believing that society can only advance if the free exchange of ideas and beliefs is permitted. His scientific writings were enormously influential, and he is credited with discovering oxygen, among other gasses. Discourses, the lecture series that he gave in Philadelphia (the basis of the above title), propounded religious and philosophical tolerance.

Professor Dale Maurice Riepe (1918-2006), was a major American philosopher and scholar, and was the Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo from 1963-1986, and taught at many other schools. His main area of expertise was Eastern Philosophy, and he traveled extensively. He wrote extensively, publishing over seventy articles and several books.
