A Handsome Set of the Waverley Novels
SCOTT, Sir Walter.

Waverley Novels.  Illustrated Library Edition  Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1872.

Illustrated Library Edition.

Twenty-four octavo volumes out of twenty-five (this set lacks Ivanhoe). Illustrated with two engravings per volume. Contemporary half light brown calf over red marbled paper boards, spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, and two burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, marbled edges and endleaves. Some rubbing to spines and minor wear to corners, a few volumes very slightly sunned at spine, front hinge of one volume starting but sound. Overall, very good.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was one of the most prolific and successful English-language novelist and poet of his day, and the first to have an international following. Not only is he known for his famous novels (Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Waverley, etc.), but also for inventing the "historical novel."
