Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was one of the most important philosophers in history, having essentially created the Enlightenment, whose political theories created liberal, conservative and socialist thought. His theories heavily influenced the French Revolution. He invented modern autobiography, and his novel, Julie (1761) was one of the best-selling books of the eighteenth-century.
