Count Leo Tolstoy (or Tolstoi, 1828-1910), is widely considered to be one of the best novelists of all time. His works, such as War and Peace (1865-1869), Anna Karenina (1875-1877), and Ivan Ilyitch (1886) are among the most powerful, moving, and influential works ever written. In his personal life, Tolstoy was a pacifist, a rationalist (he didn't follow any major religion, and was excommunicated from orthodoxy), and was a social reformer (who owned serfs).
