George Meredith (1828-1909) was a popular English novelist. The Egoist (originally published in 1879) take a semi-comic look at the plight of women in Victorian England, illustrating that they are treated merely as chattel, and "sold" into marriages in order so their families may cement bonds with the groom-to-be.
