Charles Lamb (1775 – 1834) was an English poet and essayist. Although he first achieved acclaim for his poetry (in part because of his close friendship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge), in 1820 he began writing essays under the pseudonym Elia. Although Elia's true identity was something of an open secret, the persona allowed Lamb an eloquence and emotional openness rarely seen in his previous writings. Today he is best remembered Elia's essays, which are included in this volume.
