Octavo. 432 pp. Publisher's quarter polished black calfskin over marbled paper boards, spine lettered in genuine palladium, edges stained light brown, illustrated chapter headings. With original slipcase. Slipcase is rubbed, three edges have been repaired with tape, a fourth is split. Book has some rubbing to spine, with a small chip to top edge of leather, but is still a good copy, pristine inside.
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was one of the earliest American novelists to gain a worldwide audience. His works were darkly romantic and moralistic, and took place in his native New England. The theme of repentance and dignity is common throughout Hawthorne's works.
