August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish playwright and writer, and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential Scandinavian writers, and one of the fathers of the modern theatre. He wrote in one of two styles: Naturalism (essentially, "slice of life" dramas), and later, Expressionism (distorting reality for greater emotional impact). His most famous play, Miss Julie (1888) is a hallmark of Naturalistic drama. This book, influenced by Nietzsche's writing, is about the difficulty of the lower classes in Skane (a Swedish province) after the Swedes took possession of it. "Tschandala," according to Nietzsche, is the Indian word forthe lowest castes in India (Nietzsche's source for this idea was flawed, but it was still employed by Strindberg).
