The Works of William Hogarth. Reproduced from Original Engravings in Permanent Photographs and Newly Described. With an Essay on the Genius and Character of Hogarth by Charles Lamb. Second Edition. London: Bell and Daldy, 1873.
Second edition.
Two folio volumes. iviii, 1-[127]; [iv], [123] pp. With 151 photographic plates mounted onto 116 pages with engraved borders, inserted throughout. Publisher’s full brown pebbled cloth. Front covers and spines decoratively stamped in gilt and black, and lettered in gilt, rear covers double-ruled in blind. Spines slightly browned, some edge wear to corners and edges, some light scuffing to the covers of volume I, text over-opened in a few places (yet pages and bindings are secure). Still, a very good copy.
William Hogarth (1697-1764) was the preeminent painter and print-maker in England of his day. His work was varied, some of it being portraits of distinguished persons of the day, while much of it was done as social commentary, moral lessons, or satire (some of which was occasionally bawdy). His rarer prints were feverishly collected in the later part of the eighteenth century, and continue to be highly collectible.
