First edition of the first two volumes of Rey's monumental historical work on science in antiquity. Issued in five volumes from 1930-1948, in was the result of an extensive amount of research and careful study - volume one treats the scientific discoveries made in the Eastern world prior to ancient Greeks, focusing particularly on the discoveries and advances of the Chaldeo-Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Chinese and the Hindus. Volume two is an exploration of "youth" of Greek science, covering the beginnings of Hellenic science and the School of Milet, the evolution of scientific thought during the time of Pythagoras, mathematics and physics from the end of the 6th century to the middle of the 5th, as well as the technological advances made through the middle of the 5th century.

The five volume work was issued as part of a larger project on the Evolution of Humanity, with contributions for numerous authors, historians and philosophers; the project was headed by Henri Berr, the director of La Revue de Synthèse Historique.

Rey (1873-1940) was a French philosopher, who taught the history and philosophy of science at the Sorbonne. He was very much opposed to the traditional mechanistic view of nature, a sentiment which is often echoed in his work.
