Alfred Edward Housman (1859 – 1936), usually known as A. E. Housman, was an English poet, professor, and classical scholar. He served as the Latin chair at University College, London and at Cambridge. During his lifetime Housman published numerous scholarly articles, definitive editions of Juvenal, Manilius and Lucan, and three books of poetry. He is considered not only one of the foremost classicists of his age, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time.
