Rubbing to extremities, some wear to head and tail-caps, two small stains to fore-edge of volume I, affecting first 35 pages. Occasional penciled underlining, with annotations to endpapers, otherwise a very good copy.

John Gibson Lockhart (1794 – 1854), Scottish writer and editor, is best remembered for his renowned biography of Sir Walter Scott. It is generally considered the second most important biography in the English language, after Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson.
