Supplemental Nights to the Book of the Thousand and One Nights with Notes Anthropological and Explanatory. [Volumes One , Two, Three, Four and Five] [London]: Privately Printed by the Burton Club, [n.d.].
Five quarto volumes. viii, 260; [viii], 284; xii, 445; x, 305; xv, 375 pp., including index in each volume. With a different black and white frontispiece in each volume. Publisher’s full black cloth, covers and spines stamped in silver, covers ruled in blind, top edges stained red. Some rubbing to extremities. Overall, a near fine set.
Despite its deliberately archaic style, The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night…has become the pre-eminent English translation of the Middle Eastern classic. It is the keystone of Burton’s literary reputation.
