HILBERT, D[avid] & ACKERMAN, W[ilhelm].

"Grundzuge der Theoretischen Logik".  In: Die Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften in Einzeldarstellungen Volume XXVII.  Berlin: Verlag von Julius Springer, 1928.

First edition.

Octavo viii, 120 pp. Marigold publisher's cloth ruled and lettered in black; some soiling to cloth and light edge-wear, two pages with contemporary ink notations, a few pencilled notes in margins. From the library of the philosopher and orientalist Dale Riepe (1918-2006), with his ownership inscription.

First edition of this classic text of mathematical logic, which has become the very foundation for the field. It contains the first ever presentation and analysis of first-order logic, treating both the decision problem (Entsheidungsproblem) and inquires as to the completeness of this logic. In his doctoral dissertation, written a year later, Kurt Gödel treated the question of its completeness, resulting in what is now known as his incompleteness theorem, and later his second incompleteness theorem.
