Science & Society, published quarterly since 1936, is the longest continuously published journal of Marxist scholarship in the world. It publishes original studies and articles on political economy; social and political theory; history, labor, ethnic and women's studies; aesthetics, literature and the arts, and more. Notable contributors include Herbert Aptheker, M. F. Ashley Montagu, W. E. B. Du Bois, Philip S. Foner, Irving Louis Horowitz, Corliss Lamont, Robert K. Merton, and William Appleman Williams, among many others.

Professor Dale Maurice Riepe (1918-2006) was a major American philosopher and scholar. Riepe held the post of Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo from 1963-1986, and taught at many other schools. A prolific author, he published over seventy articles and several books over the course of his career. The issues in this set include four reviews Riepe contributed to the journal, as well as a review of one of Riepe's own books, The Philosophy of India and Its Impact on American Thought.
