Dr. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (1861–1896) was a Filipino doctor, nationalist and prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. Rizal's trial and execution are generally considered the catalyst for the Philippine Revolution, and the anniversary of his death is a national holiday called Rizal Day. He is considered the Philippines' national hero, and a martyr who died for this country.
