"Thus the tale is told in Heaven, how the pure love of two human beings is a sacred thing, which the immortal themselves must not dare to cross."
WHITMAN, Walter [Walt].

"Eris; A Spirit Record." In: The Columbian [Lady's and Gentleman's] Magazine, Vol. I, No. 3, pp. 138-39.    [New York: Israel Post], March, 1844.

Quarto. 32; 16; 112; 97-144 pp., including 2 pp. of sheet music. Bound together in textured boards backed with burgundy cloth, gilt-lettered spine label. Some rubbing to extremities, corners torn from a few leaves, foxing (heavy at times, as is so often the case with this paper stock) and occasional staining. Overall a very good copy.

First appearance in print of "Eris; A Spirit Record", Walt Whitman's poetic tale of angels and the purity of mortal love.

It is interesting to note that the title was changed to "The Love of Eris: A Spirit Record" in subsequent printings.
