Two quarto volumes. xxxi, 458; [iv], 488 pp., with black and white frontispiece in each volume, 14 plates, and numerous text illustrations. Royal blue publisher's cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front covers ruled and tooled in blind with gilt supralibro. Mild wear to extremities, light tanning to spine, evidence of spine label and bookplate removal. Presumably ex-library, but still a very good set.
First American edition of Waite's comprehensive guide to Freemasonry.
Arthur Edward Waite (1857–1942) was an influential mystic and occult historian. A devoted Freemason, he wrote prolifically on a variety of esoteric subjects, including kabbalah, the Holy Grail, the Rosicrucians, freemasonry, and alchemy. Today he is perhaps best known as the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck.
