The illustrations supplied by Alice Neel (1900-1984) are perhaps the most chilling and atmospheric illustrations of a major work of Poe in recent years. It is unknown how many copies she signed before her death, but copies with her signature are much sought after by collectors.
Poe (1809-49) was an American poet, storywriter, literary critic and editor, famous for his gothic short stories and poems, including The Tell Tale Heart; The Raven; The Fall of the House of Usher; The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Premature Burial to name but a few. He is credited with having written the first true detective story (Murders in the Rue Morgue), and with being one of the major contributors to the then-fledging science fiction genre. He was also the assistant editor of Graham’s Magazine, which counted the likes of Longfellow, Fenimore Cooper, Hawthorne, Cullen Bryant, and of course Poe himself, amongst its contributors.
