George Orwell (pseudonym for Eric Blair, 1903-1950) was an influential novelist and social critic, as well as one of the most admired essayists of the twentieth-century. Although his views are considered left-wing by today’s standards, he still vehemently opposed Communism as it was practiced in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. These views eventually led him to write two of the most famous and influential political novels of all time, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm.
