A Beautifully Executed Artist's Book, From a Master of Design
MUNARI, Bruno.

Libro Illeggibile.  N. Y. 1  New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1967.

Number 928 of 2,000 copies printed in Italy.

Square folio (8.5 x 8.5"). [40] pp., unpaginated. Original stapled wraps, with red laminated dust jacket. Minor rubbing to extremities, faint spot to one page, some creases to jacket flaps. A very good copy.

Munari first conceived the 'unreadable book' in 1949, and its first incarnation was exhibited the same year at the Salto Bookshop in Milan. Over the course of his career he has created several variations, in which a "visual discourse, rather than a text composed of words, carries the thread of the story" - in this case literally, as a red thread travels through holes of various sizes across much of the book.
